Prize Tremplin Mariano Gago
The Prize “Tremplin Mariano gago”, was awarded to Mariette Pereira, in partnership with Éva Jakab Tóth, from the Center de Biophysique Moléculaire, with the project "Specific contrast agents for biomarkers visualization by magnetic resonance imaging". This award was launched with the aim of highlighting and strengthening bilateral cooperation in investigations already underway by teams from France and Portugal, promoting the continuation and expansion of joint research work.
The Prize Tremplin Mariano Gago was awarded by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation and the French Academy of Sciences. It also has the support of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, the French Ministry of Culture, the Camões Institute – Institute for Cooperation and Language and the Portuguese Office for Strategy, Planning and Cultural Assessment. The award ceremony took place on June 21, 2022, at the French Academy of Sciences.
Prize “Apoio à Promoção da Cultura Científica 2021”
The Prize “Apoio à Promoção da Cultura Científica”, by University of Coimbra, was awarded to Rui Carrilho, with the Project “Bioplastics – in the Search of a Sustainable World”, involving UC researchers from CQC and CEMMPRE, along with the participation of Agrupamento de Escolas de Coimbra Centro and Agrupamento de Escolas de Ferreira do Zêzere. This science dissemination project intends to alert the community to the problem of the abusive use of conventional plastic materials in today's society, which has led to severe environmental problems. It is intended to promote the discussion about possible solutions to this problem and to make known the innovative work developed by researchers from the University of Coimbra (UC), in the field of bioplastics development.

Prize “Projeto Semente de Investigação Interdisciplinar 2022”
The Prize “Projetos Semente de Investigação Científica Interdisciplinar”, in the UC strategic area of Climate, Energy and Mobilities, by University of Coimbra and Santander Universidades, was awarded to Rui Carrilho, with the Project “CO2BioFilter – a Bio-Filter for Carbon Dioxide Capture and Valorization: A Sustainable Approach towards Environment, Health and Circular Economy”. This project consists in using food waste to obtain carbon materials that, after modifying their structural properties, allow the creation of an efficient bio-filter for CO2 capture. The captured CO2 will then be used in the chemical synthesis of new molecules with potential antibacterial properties, addressing the principles of Sustainability and Circular Economy.

Bioplásticos - em Busca de um Futuro Sustentável
During the 2021/2022 school year, several dissemination activities were carried out in FCTUC Chemistry Department within the scope of the Project Bioplastics– in search of a Sustainable Future, coordinated by Rui Carrilho.
In November 2021, about 60 students (from 10th to 12th grades) from the Agrupamento de Escolas de Ferreira do Zêzere visited the Chemistry Department to attend a lecture and carry out laboratory activities. In May and June 2022, it was the turn of around 60 students (from 5th to 10th grades) from Agrupamento de Escolas de Coimbra Centro (Escola EB23 Poeta Manuel Silva Gaio and Escola Secundária Jaime Cortesão) to also visit the Chemistry Department of FCTUC, within the scope of this outreach activity.
Olimpíadas de Química Júnior – Semifinal Coimbra 2022
On the past 7th of May, the semifinal of the Junior Chemistry Olympics (Olimpíadas de Química Júnior) took place at the FCTUC Department of Chemistry, organized by Sara Pinto (Coordinator of the Coimbra Delegation of the Portuguese Chemical Society) with the support of the Catalysis & Fine Chemistry Research Group, which involved the participation of 60 students from 20 schools from the Central region of Portugal.
In addition to the competition, the event included a Lecture/Debate “Green Chemistry in Elementary and Secondary Schools”, given by Mariette Pereira and the Oral Communication with Practical Demonstration entitled “Bioplastics - a more sustainable alternative”.
